Writing Prompt #204: The ABC Book Challenge (The Letter V)

ABC Book Challenge - G

Memorable Books Starting with the Letter “V”:

The Vacationers

The Vacationers

  • After abandoning it originally, I’m glad I finished this book. It’s definitely more of a “fluff” or “beach” read, but it was entertaining and fun.

1522004

The Velveteen Rabbit

  • I don’t think this was my favorite book, but we definitely had a copy!

4948

The Very Hungry Caterpillar

  • This book was special to me and my family! Eric Carle is such a talented artist and writer.

Victory in the Valley

Victory in the Valley

  • Domeka used to work at my company. He’s an amazing pastor, husband, and father. This is his first book. It’s part memoir, part testimony, part Bible study. I’m already looking forward to the sequel!

Books I’d Love to Read Starting with the Letter “V”:

14865

Vanishing Acts

  • I keep hearing good things about Jodi Picoult and her books. I need to get this one at the library soon.

1116094

  • I wasn’t alive when the Chernobyl disaster occurred in 1986, but I’ve been fascinated by it since first learning about in several of my history classes.

Getting Personal #161: “Way in the lake, Lipnik Park in Ruse, Bulgaria” (Reblogged)

I feel at peace when I’m surrounded by nature, especially water, trees, or both.

This photo also symbolizes a path. A path, a journey to the other side.

We are all on our own journeys. The good thing? We can choose our paths. We have that choice. No one can take that away from us.

I’m constantly inspired by nature and landscapes. This particular photo looks like it was taken in autumn, when the leaves are changing colors and the trees are changing seasons. Here in Virginia, we don’t always experience four seasons. But, the trees do. I like to think so, anyway.

What’s your favorite season?

Tag #77: Books I’ll (Probably) Never Read Book Tag!

At the end of January, I saw this fun tag on Destiny’s blog, Howling Libraries.

Here’s the link to Destiny’s post:

1) a really hyped book you’re not interested in reading:

7896527

I’ve heard many good things, but this book just isn’t interesting to me.

2) a series you won’t start/won’t be finishing:

16096824

Same thing as #1. It takes a lot to get me interested in fantasy.

3) a classic you’re not interested in:

5297

Although I’ve heard good things about this book and its author, I struggled with Oscar Wilde in high school. I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t enjoy The Picture of Dorian Gray.

4) a genre you never read:

Erotica. Nope, no thanks, I’ll pass.

5) a book on your shelves you’ll probably never actually read:

19063

I’ve tried to read this book twice now. I’ve set it aside both times.

Tag – You’re It!

Writing Prompt #202: Romantic Movies (Day 3)

Romantic Movies

Doctor Zhivago (1965)

Image result for doctor zhivago movie poster

I first watched this movie in high school, after my mother’s incredulous reaction that I’d never seen it. I think I had to read the book, or maybe we were discussing it in school for history class.

Based on the 1957 novel by Boris Pasternak, the movie is set in Russia between the years prior to World War I and the Russian Civil War of 1917-1922. Before the movie was produced, the book was banned in the Soviet Union. Therefore, the movie was not allowed to be filmed there!

Omar Sharif is incredibly handsome, and Julie Christie is beautiful. There is an ensemble cast, including Sir Alec Guinness.

Critics were initially disappointed, particularly with the run time of more than three hours. However, the film’s reputation has improved.

The movie was nominated for a total of ten Academy Awards. It won five: Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Original Score, Best Cinematography, Best Art Direction, and Best Costume Design. Four of the five other nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director, went to The Sound of Music. The film also won five Golden Globes out of its six nominations.

If you haven’t seen it, I highly recommend it. It’s an intense love story set in a volatile history in history.

Come back tomorrow for a new movie!

Cinderella (1950)

As much as I adored Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, I enjoyed Cinderella, too. It’s a classic story. The Technicolor is stunning. The music is amazing!

I think my favorite characters in this movie are Jaq and Gus, followed by the Fairy Godmother.

The film marked the launch of the Walt Disney Music Company. The success of the movie allowed Walt Disney to finance several productions, both animated and live-action. He also established his own distribution company, entered television production, and began construction on Disneyland, which opened in Anaheim, California in 1955. Something called the Florida Project was also started, which is now known as Walt Disney World.

The movie was nominated for three Academy Awards – Best Sound; Best Music, Scoring of a Musical Picture; and Best Music, Original Song (“Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo”).

Come back tomorrow for a new movie!

Writing Prompt #199: Romantic Movies (Day 1)

I was inspired to do this challenge by Kristian! Kristian is the wonderful author of Life Lessons Around The Dinner Table.

Here’s the link to Kristian’s first post:

Thanks, Kristian, for the inspiration!

Let’s get started!

Casablanca (1942)

Image result for casablanca poster

Confession: I didn’t see this movie in full until I was a junior in high school. As part of our history class, our teacher, Mrs. Cofield, showed it to all of her classes when we started studying World War II. And what a movie to show!

This is truly a classic film. Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman are fabulous on screen.

Based on a unproduced stage play called Everybody Comes to Rick’s, it had its world premiere in New York City on November 26, 1942. It exceeded expectations. The film was nominated for eight Academy Awards, and went on to win Oscars for Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Picture.

I love “As Time Goes By.” And the classic quotes!

Although I was scared at first, I love this ride!

We wanted to ride it when we went to Disney on our honeymoon in 2015, but the wait was well over an hour the day we went to Hollywood Studios. Oh, well. Hoping we can ride it when we return to Disney in the fall of 2020!

Getting Personal #159: February Goals Recap

BeautyBeyondBones 35

February just zoomed by!

Here’s the link to my February Goals post:

Ready?

Here we go!

  1. Order my new glasses. — Did not accomplish.
  2. Donate blood. — Accomplished!
  3. Finally finish the first draft of my 2012 WIP! — Did not accomplish.
  4. Make journaling a daily habit / practice. — Accomplished!
  5. Create my own media kit. — Did not accomplish.
  6. Celebrate Valentine’s Day with Al. — Accomplished!
  7. Take unused / unwanted clothes to Clothes Mentor. — Did not accomplish.
  8. Write more Commentary posts. — Semi-Achieved.
  9. Celebrate Drew’s 30th birthday! — Accomplished!
  10. Take unwanted / duplicate American Girl items to Once Upon A Child. — Did not accomplish.

Here’s the breakdown:

Order my new glasses. — Did not accomplish.

  • As much as I wanted to do this, I didn’t have the funds to make it happen this month.

Donate blood. — Accomplished!

  • Yay! I got by with the skin of my teeth with my iron, but I did it. It was also my 50th donation! I started donating blood in 2005 after I turned 17. The minimum age now is 16, with parent permission.

Finally finish the first draft of my 2012 WIP! — Did not accomplish.

  • I didn’t touch it at all!

Make journaling a daily habit / practice. — Accomplished!

  • I don’t have a photo on hand, but I bought a super pretty journal at Target and worked hard to write in it every day. I’ve already noticed a huge difference in my anxiety levels!

Create my own media kit. — Did not accomplish.

  • I didn’t make time for this at all.

Celebrate Valentine’s Day with Al. — Accomplished!

  • Since Valentine’s Day fell on a Thursday this year, we kept it simple. I ordered steaks and all the fixings from Texas Roadhouse online, and I picked it up on the way home. We enjoyed it immensely.

Take unused / unwanted clothes to Clothes Mentor. — Did not accomplish.

  • My goal is to do this in March. My pile is overflowing!

Write more Commentary posts. — Semi-Achieved.

  • I wrote one: Commentary #83

Celebrate Drew’s 30th birthday! — Accomplished!

  • We drove up to Richmond on Saturday, February 16th, to celebrate at Carini’s Italian restaurant. More than 20 people were there! Most importantly, Drew had a wonderful time, and made a heartfelt speech to everyone. We enjoyed the pizza, cake, and catching up with everyone. It felt like a mini-college reunion!

Take unwanted / duplicate American Girl items to Once Upon A Child. — Did not accomplish.

  • I want to divide my stash between my local Once Upon A Child and Girl AGain in White Plains, New York.

Final Thoughts

  • I was able to put Accomplished next to four out of 10 goals!
  • The one goal that was Semi-Achieved: I was a busy blogger this month! Just not with that type of post, haha.
  • The five goals I did not accomplish: Most of this was related to time, and partially money.

What about you? Did you have any goals for the month of February?

Come back tomorrow to see my March Goals!

Until the next headline, Laura Beth 🙂
