Post about your zodiac sign, and whether or not it fits you

August 7th – Leo

From zodiac-signs-astrology.com:

Leo Strength Keywords:

– Confident
– Ambitious
– Generous
– Loyal
– Encouraging

Leo Weakness Keywords:

– Pretentious
– Domineering
– Melodramatic
– Stubborn
– Vain

Leo in a Nutshell:

Leo is the lion, this well suited symbol represents Leo very well. They possess a kingdom which they protest and cherish. The are high esteemed, honorable and very devoted to themselves in particular! The kingdom could be anything from work to home to a partner, whatever it is, you rule it. Leo is always center stage and full of flair, they enjoy basking in the spotlight. A Leo always makes their presence known. Leo are full of energy that acts like a magnet for other people. Others are attracted to Leo’s wit, charm, and what they have to say for they speak of things grand and very interesting. Leo will never settle for second best. They want only the best which can cause lavish excessive spending habits as they enjoy their life of luxury, which is all to easily justified by the grand and magnificent Leo! Public image is very important to Leo, with luxurious possessions and ways of life, this keeps the public image in high standing. They will do whatever it takes to protect their own reputation. Leos are very generous, kind and openhearted people. If a Leo is crossed, they will strike back with force but they are not one to hold a grudge, they easily forgive, forget and move on. Leos are always trying to make things right in the world, they have larger then life emotions and they need to feel like they have accomplished something at the end of the day. They react to situations with action instead of sitting back and thinking about it, they are not impulsive however because they look at the future and consider consequences of their actions.

I agree with most of this:

  • I feel like I am full of energy, all the time.
  • I do need to feel like I accomplished something at the end of the day.
  • I feel like a lion!
  • I consider myself to be generous, kind, and openhearted.
  • I always want to make things right.
  • I definitely have larger than life emotions.

However:

I do not live a life of luxury – Far from it!

I am definitely impulsive, and impatient!

Very devoted to myself – Nope!

So, it’s about 50-50 for me.

Something that you miss

I miss a lot of the classic cartoon shows, and a lot of the shows PBS created in the 1990s, when I grew up. It’s hard to watch the Disney Channel, Nickelodeon, and Cartoon Network these days, and seeing the previews for new shows in the movie theaters makes me cringe. I realize that times change, but even Sesame Street is shorter now! Yeesh!

Here’s a few of the shows I’m talking about:

What do you think?

Did you watch any of these shows?

Post your favorite movies that you never get tired of watching

Ghostbusters (1984)

This one will always be my favorite. I’ve seen Ghostbusters II (1989) and the reboot – Ghostbusters (2016). Both of those are decent, but nothing compares to the original. I’ve been to the firehouse in New York City. It’s a perfect blend of funny and scary!

footloose-impawards

Footloose (1984)

I’m a sucker for musicals. Kevin Bacon is amazing. Plus, the soundtrack is fantastic. I love the story, and the sense of triumph and determination. Al and I went to see the remake in 2011 – It was good, and it was nice that they updated it, but I’ll always be partial to the original.

dirty-dancing-moviepostershop

Dirty Dancing (1987)

I can’t believe I didn’t see this movie until college! I love the story, the music, and Jennifer Grey and Patrick Swayze are basically a perfect pair. I’ve been to Mountain Lake in Virginia, where some of the movie was filmed – Twice! I remember being in awe the first time I saw the resort, the lake, and the ballroom!

ghost-movieposter

Ghost (1990)

This movie originally scared me. But, as an adult, it’s a wonderful romantic movie. I always giggle during the pottery scene. It’s hilarious, especially with Whoopi Goldberg. Plus, I can’t resist a movie set in New York!

Jurassic Park moviepostershop

Jurassic Park (1993)

This was another movie that scared me out of my wits as a kid! I remember my uncle having taped this one and The Lost World (1997) and I discovered them while on vacation at my grandparents’ house. I watched both. Bad idea! I had nightmares about dinosaurs for weeks.

However, it’s now one of my favorite movies / series. Al and I saw this when it was re-released in theaters for the 20 anniversary in 2013! Plus, seeing Jurassic World (2015) multiple times, I love the story and the characters.

Forrest Gump (1994)

Every time this movie is on TV, I almost always watch it. I love almost every movie that Tom Hanks has ever made, but this is my all-time favorite. I love the history, the actors, the music, and the story. It’s full of drama, but it’s also funny.

twister-impawards

Twister (1996)

This was another movie that originally scared me – I first watched it at a sleepover in elementary school, during a thunderstorm! But, the ride at Universal Studios was my favorite. Every time this movie is on TV, I usually watch it. I love Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt, and how they try to get inside a tornado, in the name of science!

Almost Anything Disney / Pixar

I’m so excited for the next few years – Lots of exciting movies / sequels in the works!

What are you excited about

Ha! Trick question. I’m usually excited for almost everything!

  • Baskin-Robbins ice cream in pint-size – I just bought some the other day! Yum!
  • Traveling this weekend – I’m excited to see my in-laws, and have a new Adventure Time post on here next week!
  • The return of fall TV – New seasons are premiering soon! I’m looking forward to The Flash, The Big Bang Theory, Last Man Standing, and a few others!
  • Planning to see Sully at the historic Commodore Theatre – I love Tom Hanks. I’ve been looking forward to this movie all year! Plus, my mom really wants to go see it. She loves movies, but rarely wants to spend the movie to go see it in theaters, so whenever she wants to go see something, I almost always go with her.
  • My shorter hair! I feel so much lighter now!

  30. Your highs and lows for the month

Write about 5 blessings in your life

  1. My husband and my family – I have an amazing husband who loves me for who I am, and we’ve built a great life together. I can’t wait to see what happens next! My family has always been there for me, and always been incredibly supportive. If anything is wrong, they’ll drop whatever they’re doing to come help. I’m thrilled to have gained a large family by way of marriage, as well!
  2. My job – I love my job as an analyst. I wasn’t expecting to work for a health care system, working with insurance contracts, but I really enjoy it. I love the people I work with, and that makes all the difference. I’ve been with Riverside for nearly four years now, and I don’t want to ever leave!
  3. Food – I’m incredibly grateful that I’m able to go to the grocery store and pick out almost anything to eat. I’ve known people who have been on food stamps and welfare, and others who visit food pantries for assistance. I worked with FACES – Farmville’s food assistance program – while at Longwood, and seeing the gratitude on their faces hit hard with me.
  4. Running water – I have clean water to drink. I’m able to have bottled and filtered water as work. We have indoor plumbing. I’ve been on mission trips where people in North Carolina have gone without all of these things. We redid the single bathroom in one house over the course of two days – New floor, new toilet, everything – and it made a huge difference.
  5. Freedom of worship – I’m able to pray at any time, in any place! I’m able to go to my church at any time, or call my pastors at any time. Men, women, and children in other countries aren’t able to do that, and that makes me incredibly sad.

Ready?

Here we go!

Rec’d

the-flash-imdb

(1) The Flash – This is the first superhero show that I absolutely love. The story is well-written, there’s drama and suspense, and the writers have tried really hard to stay true to the character and the comic books! The only thing I’ve hated thus far was the season 2 finale – It was terrible! However, I’m curious to see what they do with season 3!

last_man_standing_intertitle-wikipedia

(2) Last Man Standing – This is one of the best comedies I’ve watched. We’ve blown through all of the seasons, between Netflix and a handful of Friday nights. If you liked Home Improvement, definitely check this one out. Tim Allen is hilarious, and the cast of characters around him are awesome!

bigbangtheoryday-170934

(3) The Big Bang Theory – I got started late with this show, but I fell in love quickly. It’s awkward and adorable. They make science awesome! I can’t believe that Season 10 premieres next week!

Wreck’d

supergirl-cbs

(1) Supergirl – I really wanted to like this show. I was so excited when they cast Melissa Benoist (Glee). But, after just a few episodes, it was clear that they were trying way too hard. Plus, they left out a few key characters! I’m happy that CBS didn’t cancel it, and they’ve moved it to the CW with The Flash. I plan to watch an episode or two of the new season, but I don’t have high hopes.

gossip-girl

(2) Gossip Girl – I read a few of the books between high school and college, and when I heard they were making it into a TV show, I wanted to give it a whirl. But, I knew immediately that it wasn’t my cup of tea. The books showcase the elite rich in New York, and it’s definitely evident in the show! It was too much for me.

the_walking_dead_title_card

(3) The Walking Dead – I have several friend who love this show. I think that’s great. Once I found out it had zombies and violence, I said no thanks, absolutely not. I don’t do well with a lot of violence / blood / gore. I tried one of the first episodes, and it almost made me sick.

Something you always think “what if…” about

Once I was old enough to understand, I learned that my dad was up for promotion in the Coast Guard and didn’t receive it (This was in the early 1990s). I always thought about what if he had received it, and I still think about it.

I know we would have gotten transferred more often, probably once every few years. He absolutely deserved that promotion, but since he didn’t get it, we settled in southeastern Virginia. He transitioned into the Coast Guard Reserve and took a government job full-time. We made Chesapeake our home, and it’s been wonderful for almost 25 years. The house my parents have holds so many special memories. It’s hard to believe next year will be 25 years.

I’m grateful that we didn’t move around very much – My parents only moved twice after I was born – From New York to Alexandria, and then Alexandria to Chesapeake. It’s funny, I’ve moved more times as an adult now – To Farmville for college, to Newport News to live on my own, to my in-laws house in Chesapeake after we got married, and now to Portsmouth where Al and I have our first house together.

I often daydream of where we may have ended up as my dad finished out his Coast Guard career – We could have lived on the West Coast for a while, or other places on the East Coast, maybe even Florida. Who knows! If anything, learning this information, I think, sparked my desire to travel.

Rec’d

(1) Forrest Gump – This is one of my all-time favorite movies. If it’s on TV, I almost always watch it. I love the perseverance that Forrest has, and how he makes his impact on history. It has a wonderful mix of humor, charm, wit, fear, determination, triumph, and tragedy.

(2) A Few Good Men – I didn’t watch this one in full until a few years ago. It came on TV one Saturday night when I was living alone in my apartment. Since the military has been a huge part of my life, I was naturally drawn to this movie. It does a good job in showcasing what the Navy and the Judge Advocate General’s Corps (JAG) do every single day. It’s become one of my favorite movies. It’s full of drama, intrigue, and suspense!

(3) Grosse Pointe Blank – Al’s brother, Nick, introduced me to this movie around 2009. I had never heard of it, and Nick was shocked. We immediately sat down and watched it. It’s a bloody dark comedy – Literally – but it’s so good. I’m able to ignore much of the violence because of the humor and the way the characters interact. John Cusack and Minnie Driver absolutely shine, and Joan Cusack and Dan Aykroyd are roaringly funny. I’ve seen it several times, and whenever it comes on TV, we usually catch part of it.

Wreck’d

(1) Requiem for a Dream – This one was really confusing and tough for me to watch. I don’t think I even finished it. I was in college, and the way the movie opened threw me for a loop, and I spent the next hour trying to figure out what exactly I was watching. I know that it’s an acclaimed film, but the parts I did watch, I was just confused and lost.

(2) Snow White and the Huntsman – Al and I saw this in the theaters. The trailers looked interesting, but the movie itself fell flat on its face almost immediately. We’re not partial to Kristen Stewart, and Charlize Theron’s character was just weird in this film. The special effects were good, but that was about it.

(3) Reservoir Dogs – Several of my friends are huge Quentin Tarantino fans. I’ve seen almost all of the movies he’s made. The premise is good, the story is intriguing, but it’s just too bloody for my sensitive stomach to handle. I don’t do well with a lot of violence in movies, and this one was just too much.

I love this idea. I plan to do another post on TV shows, and possibly books!

What movies do you think should be Rec’d, or Wreck’d? I’d love to hear about it!

Until the next headline, Laura Beth 🙂
