The Wedding Singer (1998)

The Wedding Singer film poster.jpg

I LOVE this movie!!

In my opinion, this is one of the best 1980s-period movies. Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore are adorable. And I heard the name “Julia Gulia” for YEARS before I saw this movie in full.

In a way, this movie is still relevant today. There are people who fall in love with others who have certain images or ideals of them, like Linda did with Robbie. However, Robbie finally comes to his senses and recognizes what a good thing, and a good person, Julia is. And that’s part of what makes this movie so endearing.

Glenn’s character reminded me of my ex, John, in a really creepy way. I’m glad Julia finally saw the light, but her character reminded me of me when I was in school. It was weird!

This movie is easily in my top 10 films now. I’ve only seen it twice, but I plan to watch it more frequently. Like other films, a big selling point for me is the soundtrack. I also love how Billy Idol is involved!

Fools Rush In (1997)

Fools rush in ver2.jpg

About a year ago, Al and I were looking for something to watch on streaming during a weekend. He asked if I’d ever seen Fools Rush In. The blank look I gave him said it all, and he couldn’t believe it.

This movie is now in my top 20 favorite movies. It’s very much of the time period – Matthew Perry was in the limelight because of Friends, and Salma Hayek’s star was rising, having been a telenovela star and then in a few feature films at this point.

Although insta-love doesn’t always work, this movie is an exception. Their characters are instantly attracted to each other. And, in a city like Las Vegas, nothing is surprising.

One of the best things about this movie is the soundtrack. So many good songs! I mean, Elvis! Also, Dean Martin, Wayne Newton, Enrique Iglesias, and Gloria Estefan!

The story itself is very sweet, and I enjoyed their chemistry. I want to watch it again!

Clueless (1995)

Clueless film poster.png

This movie was all the rage when it was released! I was only seven when it came out, much too young to see a PG-13 movie. However, we definitely talked about it at school.

I didn’t realize it was a loose re-telling of Emma until years later. I love how the director, Amy Heckerling, studied real Beverly Hills high school students to learn how they talked and their mannerisms, among other things.

And, Paul Rudd – You’ve never aged! Holy cow!

I didn’t care for Alicia Silverstone’s character, but now that I’ve seen it several times, I think the producers did a good job of capturing the attitudes and lifestyles of wealthy teenagers. I wanted all the clothes!!

I enjoyed the relationships in this movie. Typical high school love, but also sweet.

Writing Prompt #216: Romantic Movies (Day 15)

Forrest Gump (1994)

Film poster with a white background and a park bench (facing away from the viewer) near the bottom. A man wearing a white suit is sitting on the right side of the bench and is looking to his left while resting his hands on both sides of him on the bench. A suitcase is sitting on the ground, and the man is wearing tennis shoes. At the top left of the image is the film's tagline and title and at the bottom is the release date and production credits.

I love the love Forrest has for Jenny throughout this gem of a movie. This movie is my all-time favorite. If it’s on TV, I watch it. I first watched it in middle school, when it was broadcast on ABC that Saturday night when I was babysitting. I was so enthralled with the movie, I barely moved until it was over.

I can’t believe it’s the 25th anniversary of the release this summer! I hope theaters re-release it. I really want to see it on the big screen for the first time.

Sleepless in Seattle (1993)

Sleepless in seattle.jpg

Tom Hanks is on my top five list of favorite actors. I think I’ve seen nearly every movie he has been in!

This movie is no exception. I haven’t watched it in a while, but I remember watching it on TV years ago. When I stumbled upon it, the movie was already halfway through, and I was inspired to watch it from the beginning. I love the love Jonah has for Sam, and for Annie. It’s such a sweet story!

I want to re-watch so many movies now, thanks to this blogging challenge!

Groundhog Day (1993)

Groundhog Day (movie poster).jpg

I love this movie. We usually watch it at least once a year. While not billed as a true “romantic comedy,” I always get the good vibes as the story between Bill Murray and Andie MacDowell unfolds in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania.

It’s one of those movies that is technically “vintage” now at more than 25 years old, but it’s also timeless.

Beauty and the Beast (1991)

Beautybeastposter.jpg

Although I love nearly all Disney movies, this one holds a special place in my heart. It’s such a good animated movie!

Based on the French fairy tale, I imagined myself as Belle many times. She’s definitely naive in the beginning of the movie, but I love that she loves books!

The castle servants are enchanted with Belle, and so was I. I remember feeling incredibly scared when the Beast first appears, and feeling many of the same emotions as Belle. Thankfully, she perseveres and they begin to fall in love. Plus, his library was to die for!!

It’s one of those feel-good movies that I enjoy watching when I’m feeling sick or down.

Although the original will have my heard forever, I really enjoyed the live-action adaptation (2017). I saw it three times in theaters!

Ghost (1990)

Ghost (1990 movie poster).jpg

I still remember my mom’s shock when I told her I hadn’t see Ghost. This was when I was in high school. We either rented it, or got it from the library, and watched it together. It quickly became one of my favorite movies!

It’s a great story, set in New York City. I’m on a roll! Not to mention Demi Moore is adorable with her “boy cut.” I pined for their loft apartment! And Patrick Swayze, once again, lights up the screen in more ways than one. They are a great couple. Despite the early tragedy / drama, it’s truly a good movie, with chills, thrills, romance, and plenty of laughs. Whoopi Goldberg absolutely earned her Best Supporting Actress Oscar!

I won’t give away the movie if you haven’t seen it. If you haven’t seen it, though, I highly recommend you watch it. It was released in 1990, but it’s one of those movies that feels “vintage” now, but also relevant today.

Mom and I went to see it at the local movie theater for either the 20th or 25th Anniversary. It was my first time seeing it on the big screen, and it was such a cool experience. It kind of brought everything full circle, in a way. For Mom, it brought back so many memories of her going to see it in theaters in 1990, when we lived in Governors Island in the middle of New York Harbor.

And, yes, we totally sang along to “Unchained Melody.”

When Harry Met Sally… (1989)

WhenHarryMetSallyPoster.jpg

Another movie set in New York!

Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan are one of my favorite movie couples of all time!

I love how the movie explores the question, “Can men and women ever just be friends?”

The famous “I’ll have what she’s having” scene was filmed in Katz’s Delicatessen, one of my favorite places in Manhattan.

This sign still hangs in Katz’s.

I want to watch this again soon! It’s one of those feel-good movies that still hold up, nearly 30 years later!
