I can’t believe another year has passed.

On this day in 2016, I posted the following:

I loved doing it, and since I received so much positive feedback, I’ve decided to make this an annual post!

Plus, I’m really proud of myself – In the last year, I’ve posted nearly 50 “Getting Personal” posts. Wow!!

Today, Al and I celebrate seven years together.

Here are seven photos that are special to me.

Adventure Time: Outer Banks, NC Edition (First Wedding Anniversary Getaway!)

042c2d0c9db9c4ea14ff08a46230670c

Our original plan was getting away to the mountains of Virginia for our first wedding anniversary.

However, with a mid-November wedding, we didn’t realize how expensive the accommodations were at this time of year!

So, we switched to Plan B: The beach!

The Outer Banks of North Carolina are basically a 90-minute drive from our house. We’ve been through Corolla, Nags Head, and Bodie Island on previous trips.

Al hadn’t been farther south than that.

We decided on Hatteras.

It was a three-hour car ride, but it was well worth it.

We found a really nice place, the Cape Hatteras Motel, in Buxton.Β It’s right on the beach. It was literally half the cost of any place in the mountains, mainly because it was the off-season.

One of our first stops was the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse! It was just a few miles from the motel.

img_2841

The Cape Hatteras Lighthouse. We couldn’t climb it – Their season runs through Columbus Day – but we could walk around and enjoy the park.

img_2843

I love these wooden signs.

img_2844

I love how it’s in the shape of an arrowhead.

img_2845

I think this was my favorite photo of the whole trip!

The next day, we drove down to Hatteras Island and explored the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum. It explores the rich history of the area – Fishing, diving, shipwrecks, the USS Monitor, and its role in the Civil War and other events.

The museum is right next to the Hatteras ferry terminal, so we decided to take the ferry across the sound to Ocracoke Island on Sunday.

img_2853

We passed this ferry on the way to Ocracoke.

img_2854

I love how all the wooden signs are different.

img_2855

It’s one of the smaller lighthouses, and no one can climb it. But, it’s still a beautiful sight.

img_2856

Ocracoke is a charming island. We ate lunch at the Ocracoke Oyster Company, and had delicious seafood. The next time we travel down, we’d like to check out some more of the islands and lighthouses.

img_2859

The view from our hotel balcony during sunset and the full moon.

img_2860

This was taken the night of the supermoon. It was huge as it was rising, but this was the best I could do with my camera.

img_2862

This was such a relaxing vacation!

We tried several local restaurants during our trip, and everything was delicious!

Al is also creating a video about our trip! I’ll post it as soon as it’s finished.

We had a great time on our first vacation since our honeymoon.

Next year: We’re thinking about the Grand Canyon!

Getting Personal #40: “Blue Morpho Butterfly Swarm, Brazil” (Reblogged)

Another breathtaking photo from Just Wunderlust! I love butterflies, so when I saw this notification pop up in my email this morning, I knew I had to share it.

When you see a butterfly, what does it mean to you?

To me, a butterfly symbolizes peace, tranquility, and strength.

Every September, Al’s mom’s family has their annual family reunion in Keysville, Virginia. Conveniently, Keysville is only about 45 minutes from the Vardaro farm in Scottsburg!

Al and I took Friday, September 16th off from work, and drove the truck up to the farm. We left around 8:00 a.m., and stopped at the Hardee’s in Emporia, Virginia, which is roughly the halfway point. The typical drive from Hampton Roads to Scottsburg is about three hours. It’s a nice, relaxing drive. You basically take Route 58 West all the way there. When you reach South Boston, you turn on to Route 360. Once there, it’s only about 15 more minutes.

We spent Friday with Mom and Dad at the farm. Lunch was delicious. We explored the farm, saw Scooter the horse, and fished!

img_2800

Scooter’s so pretty!

img_2803

The cows next door were out and about!

img_2807

Scooter was very interested in Al’s camera!

img_2809

I will never get sick of this view. Absolutely gorgeous!

img_2815

Al caught a 14 1/2 inch bass!

img_2823

There was a harvest moon rising. I thought this photo I took was pretty cool – The power line is slicing the moon in half!

I got up early on Saturday and went out to fish with Mom.

I FINALLY CAUGHT MY BIG BASS!!

img_2829

Fifteen inches!

I was able to avenge the bass that took the best fishing lure on Memorial Day weekend. I was so excited!

Saturday was also the day of the reunion. We left the farm around 10:15 a.m. to get there at 11:00. Uncle Bill and Aunt Susan live in Keysville, and they always reserve the fellowship hall of the United Methodist Church. It’s always a good time!

This year, there were about 25 people, which was larger than the last few years. It was smorgasbord of food!

img_2831

The food was on two 8-foot tables. Sixteen feet full of goodness!

We also celebrated Uncle Joe’s birthday. Mom Vardaro is one of four kids – Joe’s the baby. Brenda brought a cake, and we all sang Happy Birthday. Then, great-uncle Herbert presented Joe with a gorgeous, solid gold pocket watch that has been in the Chambers family for nearly a century. It was a nice presentation, and several people shed tears. Joe promised to keep it in the family as long as possible.

After the reunion, we drove home and relaxed. Almost everyone took a nap!

Around sunset, we moseyed out again. We built a fire and enjoyed s’mores!

img_2833

The skies are always beautiful!

img_2835

The “guard donkey” that keeps an eye out on the cows. There were baby calves this time!

I caught another one! It was so exciting!

It was a wonderful weekend. It’s a nice escape that’s only a few hours away!

I need to get better about posting these adventures sooner!

For Memorial Day weekend, a good portion of the Vardaro family gathered at the farm in Scottsburg, Virginia:

  • Mom and Dad V.
  • Al and Laura Beth
  • The “Bengdaros” – Nick and Savy
  • Aunt Jeanne and Uncle Dan – Dad’s sister and brother-in-law

We also had an awesome guest:

During the weekend, we enjoyed fishing on the pontoon boat, amazing food, great conversation, and we even ventured out to the World of Sports – Cinema I & II in South Boston to see X-Men: Apocalypse!

This past weekend, we traveled to Scottsburg to see Al’s parents and the farm. It’s becoming a nice weekend getaway. In the last year, we’ve been there three times.

Here are recaps of the other visits:

Every year in September, Al’s mom side of the family has a reunion in Keysville, Virginia. Now that they have the farm, it’s a much shorter drive!

This round was really special because Nick, Savy, and Mia drove up as well!

Al drove the two of us in the Mustang, and Nick drove Savy’s SUV. Al and I stopped for dinner, calling Mom every hour to check in. We pulled up to the house around 11:00, just minutes after Nick, Savy, and Mia arrived.

It was definitely a full house! Seven people split among two bedrooms and the living room. We made it work though! Air mattresses are awesome.

On Saturday morning, Mom had breakfast ready – Cheesy eggs, maple sausage, donuts. Delicious!

It was really foggy in the morning:

The garage. Dad has made so much progress since we last saw it in June!

We got to meet Scooter, the horse that Mom and Dad have on the property, early. He gets an apple every morning and grain at night. Mom and Dad have an arrangement with 16-year-0ld Caleb, who lives down the road. Mom and Dad host Scooter on the property, and Caleb does the rest.

He has plenty of grass.

He has plenty of grass.

We headed out to Keysville around 11:00. Dad stayed behind – A crew had arrived earlier to do the roof of the garage that he’s been building, and they needed more shingles. He was able to make the reunion though!

There was so much food at the church – Fried chicken, meatballs, vegetables, potatoes, pasta salad, bread … Yum! And the desserts – Holy moly!

We stayed for a couple of hours, enjoying each other’s company. We talked about the wedding a bit, along with people’s recent vacations and travels. I hung out with Nick, Savy, and Mia for a while on the church playground, while Al went for a spin in Uncle Joe’s Dodge Charger.

We missed the Moore clan though!

After we got back from the reunion, we traipsed around the farm. Eight acres is a lot to begin with, and we didn’t cover it all!

Al was nerding out all last week – He bought a new quadcopter, the Phantom 3 by DJI. He couldn’t wait to test it out! The highest he flew it was around 200 feet! Amazing πŸ™‚

Al getting ready to fly it on Saturday afternoon.

Al getting ready to fly it on Saturday afternoon.

The awesome thing about this drone is that the camera is built in, and it’s much steadier. Also, Al was able to download an app to his phone, and the controller has a space for the phone to sit. You can watch what the camera is filming in real time!

For dinner, Mom and Dad got the biggest pizza that I have ever seen. I wish I had taken a picture of it! I kid you not – This was a 24-INCH pizza. Wow! The slices were so big, you had to fold the bottom over to fit it on the plates!

After dinner, Al filmed some more. Dad set up a bonfire in the yard next to the pond. Mom and Mia fished for a while, using a lighted bobber! Nick brought his guitar, so we spent a good while around the fire, attempting to sing classic songs. And, of course, s’mores!

Bonfire!

We capped off Saturday with the Doctor Who premiere!

It was an awesome weekend. It was tiring though! There’s always something new to do. The garage is getting closer and closer to completion!

Staunton River State Park is only three miles away. Al and I left around 10:00 on Sunday morning. When we called Mom to check in later on, the crew had gone to the park to walk the trails and let Mia explore the gigantic playground!

I look forward to the next visit.

Until then, here’s the video, titled Above The Farm, that Al put together! His new quadcopter is AWESOME! Al also brought his Canon camera, and set up a nice time-lapse of the bonfire.

Check it out – Let us know what you think!

Commentary #9: “15 Women Who Would Like To Remind Everyone That Cosplay Is Not Consent”

This all started with a Buzzfeed articleΒ titled “15 Women Who Would Like To Remind Everyone That Cosplay Is Not Consent.”

When Al and I were preparing for Tidewater Comicon in May, I remember asking Al one specific question:

“Do you think I should wear my black leggings with my Ghostbusters costume?”

Tidewater Comicon, May 2015.

You see, the reason I asked Al that question is because the Ghostbusters costume I have is “sexy.”

The costume dress is low-cut and the hem stops around my knees.

In answering my question, Al said that I should wear the leggings, to be safe.

When I first read the Buzzfeed article, I was horrified. I’m glad I was sitting down, otherwise I would have fallen down. These women had hear and experience terrible, unwarranted, blatant harassment from men, all at San Diego Comic Con. I felt disgusted. I felt violated for them.

It made me think back to Tidewater CC in May. I’m glad I wore the black leggings. I’m glad Al was with me the entire weekend.

More so, I’m glad that my first cosplay/comicon experience was a positive one.

I recall everyone who wanted to take a picture of me – And there were a few, it was so flattering – ASKED me first. That’s key. I never mind, and I always tried to thank the person for asking. It’s so important.

I put out a call on Facebook for pictures and stories and opinions on this issue. I received several responses! I’ll start with Kristi, one of my friends since childhood:

Kristi had this to say about cosplay:

“As for the topic, cosplay is an art form that can be enjoyed in many ways. Some people like to create exact replicas of costumes, some more inspiration-based. For me, I like to take characters and really mold them to fit my body type. I like to be creative in what I create and still have the essence of that character visible. Cosplay is for everyone, though there have been times I had to step away because of ridicule. I’ve always struggled with my weight and there were some who flat out told me I had no business dressing up because I was fat and unattractive. Even though I consider myself strong, those comments will cut into someone’s soul and even an art form they once loved would get tossed by the wayside. However, I still dabble from time to time and get a rush from creating something amazing.”

And her thoughts on consent:

“Being part of cosplay since my high school days, I have witnessed much at conventions especially through the years. People will snap a shot without permission and though some would consider that an innocent act it can turn into a hellfire. I’ve seen people appear on slander sites, their picture passed around with horrible strands of ridicule thrown about targeted at them. I’ve seen photos become a tool for sexual harassment and worse. And it’s not just photographs you have to worry about.

There were times where people would touch me and my friendsΒ inappropriatelyΒ without consent and even with a push to tell othersΒ about the violations, it would be played off as just something that happens at conventions. From recent conventions I’ve gone to, the community seems to better handle such cases but all-in-all I don’t think we are where we need to be. I don’t care if they are in an outfit showing off a lot of skin. I don’t care if they are fully clothed. Man or woman, I do not care. Consent, in a convention setting and a setting in the world beyond, is key. If you have no consent, don’t do it. Don’t keep pressing buttons, don’t try and sneak it in later, just don’t do it. It only takes one time for someone to toss away something they love for fear of what could happen. Just be accepting, have some respect for everyone, and let’s all be geeks and nerds together without fear.”

Knowing Kristi for many years, reading that she has been harassed because of her struggles with weight made me fucking pissed. I get angry when people around me make snide, unwarranted comments about people who are heavy. I have several friends who continue to struggle with their weight, and it hurts me deeply. Ain’t nobody got time for that!

Our friend Justin has been to many conventions in the last several years, his favorite being Katsucon.

His thoughts on cosplay and consent:

“Cosplay is something that should be enjoyed by everyone, and there are people who ruin that by trying to get their pics in when they are not allowed. Apparently no one told them ‘no’ or they don’t think it applies to them. I can’t stand people who try to sneak a pic in of a cosplayer, especially their crotch, chest, or butt, without their consent just because they want it. It’s rude, disrespectful, and just wrong. Cosplayers don’t mind if you want a picture. Just ask and be polite. Hell I’ve had people take many pics of me and they were all polite and asked me first. I try to extend the courtesy to them as well. No one wants to see their friend/spouse/girlfriend or boyfriend get harassed and then lose all spirit in cosplaying. It affects more than just that person, it can affect a group of others. When one person gets harassed, their friends may not want to come back to the convention either. We all have each others back, and people need to learn that. It’s 2015, you are all human beings, act civil, dammit.”Β

Justin recently told me the story of what happened at Katsucon 2013. The convention center was hosting two conventions that weekend – Katsucon, and a religious leadership convention for young adults.

The kids attending the leadership convention were in absolute awe of Katsucon and all the activity, especially everyone in cosplay.

However, the adults were far less kind. These adults, put there that weekend to guide and lead these kids in the ways of their religion and better themselves, unfortunately started behaving badly. The adults violated multiple people of their privacy and made astounding comments to the cosplayers, many times in front of the children they were leading. Justin was horrified. When he told me, being a Christian woman, I was astounded.

“If you don’t wanna be stared at, stop dressing the way you do at conventions.”

That’s a quote that’s been seen many times, at different conventions.

Justin said, with complete sarcasm, “You know, it’s totally your fault that guys will come up and snap pics of your boobs and ass without your consent.”

FUCK NO!

Unfortunately, no matter how shitty that statement is true, some do think it’s true.

Here’s some other articles that are publicizing this fight:

All of these articles were either published in 2013 or 2014. This has been a problem for a long time, and I, for one, am very happy to see this fight.

Harassment is ILLEGAL.

Moreover, it’s WRONG.

Despite this negativity, I’m holding my head high. I loved going to Tidewater in May. I cannot wait for the next one. I plan to cosplay as Stargirl (Courtney Whitmore) next year.

I’m happy people are standing up and trying to fight harassment. Unfortunately, people will continue to say their thoughts and opinions, without a filter, and usually without using their brain.

However, I’m a geek and a nerd. I love conventions. I love cosplay. And no brainless, spineless comment will deter me.

Adventure Time: Scottsburg, VA Edition (Round 2)

This past weekend, we visited Al’s parents at their farm πŸ™‚

It was different this time around – My parents came to visit. They followed us up on Saturday morning. We got to the so-called halfway point in Lawrenceville, VA, and we knew we were in the country when the Food Lion employee walking into work in front of us actually said hello and struck up a conversation!

Scottsburg is roughly a three-hour drive from Chesapeake, and it’s one of the easiest drives. Unless there’s some sort of accident that backs up traffic, you follow US-58 almost the whole way there. It’s more fun in a convertible, like Al and I did last year, but we still had a great time this trip. It’s really nice to be able to drive a couple of hours and get away for a bit, without having to leave the state!

When our two-car caravan arrived around noon on Saturday, Al’s mom had lunch ready. Yummy meatball subs and her famous pasta salad! My parents got the tour of the house – It’s a very short tour, since the house is only two bedrooms and one bathroom!

After we ate, we took the longer property tour. They’re on eight acres of land! It was really hot outside, so we traipsed through only half of it. Al’s mom pointed out the garage that Al’s dad is building himself, the barn, the pond, the fields, the cow pasture next door, and the small garden she’s started since the last time Al and I visited.

It was a really nice visit.

One of the coolest experiences we had was at dinner. Ernie’s is the local place, it has an amazing buffet. We noticed that there were more cars than usual in the parking lot. We were seated in the huge dining room, used for meals, wedding receptions, and more.

We quickly found out why there were so many cars: There was a huge group in the same room, celebrating a man named Cecil, who just turned 90 years old. The six of us were thoroughly entertained by all the stories that were told about this wonderful man, from his children to a host of friends. Al’s mom was so moved that she asked someone to point out who Cecil was. Then she went up to him, explained we had been seated in the corner, enjoyed all the stories and accolades, and she wished him a Happy Birthday and hugged him. It was so sweet!

Before we realized it was Cecil’s birthday bash, we saw a few women stand up and introduce themselves to the crowd. Two of these women were very candid, explaining that they were single. One of the two had the best line of the night:

“I’m such-and-such age, I am single, and I am looking for a man … but I need to check his bank account first.”

My parents left after dinner to head home. Al and I stayed the night. I think all four of us were in bed before 9:30 p.m., we were so tired.

Sunday morning, I woke up around 6:00, not able to sleep comfortably any longer. I knew Al’s mom was awake, so it was nice to talk to her for a while and be with her and Lilly, their sweet chocolate lab. Al slept until 6:30 a.m., a new record! Since the two of us get up on the five weekdays around 4:30 a.m. to go to the gym and work out together, Al rarely sleeps in.

Before we left to head home, Al’s mom made the fluffiest pancakes with bacon and maple sausage – Yum!

I look forward to the next visit!

Adventure Time: Norfolk, VA Edition

During the first weekend in June, Al and checked out Harborfest 2015!

Harborfest is an annual event for downtown Norfolk, chock-full of tall ships, maritime events, live music, and amazing food! This year was the 39th annual festival, billed as “the largest, longest-running, free maritime festival in the nation!”

All the juicy details are inΒ the 2015 Norfolk Harborfest Event Program.

Al and I decided to ride The Tide for the first time! It’s the light rail system that runs for seven miles throughout downtown Norfolk and part of Virginia Beach. I drove us to one of the park and ride stations, close to the Virginia Beach end of the line. We picked a one-day GO pass, so for $4.00 you had a ticket for unlimited rides for 12 hours.

Once we disembarked at the Civic Plaza station, we walked a couple blocks to Town Point Park, a 7-acre space on the edge of the Elizabeth River, where all the action was!

Al and I stayed for about two hours, and headed home for dinner. Later, his brother Nick, girlfriend Savy, and Savy’s daughter Mia met us at the house and we piled in my car to head to NOAA, where my dad works. The parking lot happens to be on the banks of the river, so it’s a perfect place to watch the fireworks extravaganza!

The photo below depicts a previous Harborfest fireworks show, taken from the bow of the NOAA Ship Thomas Jefferson.

Harborfest was so much fun, although it was a little steamy that Saturday. It’s a huge event and even though it was crowded, there was a relaxed, light atmosphere. We didn’t tour the Eagle, sadly, because the line was wrapped around the ship and down the block. Hopefully next year!

The light rail was an awesome way to great around, and I’m so glad Al suggested it. It saved us money – The special event parking close to the festival was more expensive than the light rail pass – and it was a great experience. I plan to use the light rail a lot more when I visit Norfolk.

If you’ve never been to Norfolk or Harborfest, check it out!!
