Write about someone who inspires you

My Grandma Grace was my mom’s mom. I’ll admit, she was my favorite grandparent. I was fortunate enough to have all four of my grandparents until the age of 20, which is exceedingly rare among my age group.

Born in 1917, she survived the Great Depression in Ripley, West Virginia. Her mother was Laura Bethany Powers (My namesake), and Grandma’s childhood was shaped by farming, gardening, cooking, grit, perseverance, and determination. She went to college in Ohio and earned a degree in Social Work.

She married my Grandpa Madan in June 1944, just before D-Day. My Grandpa was in the Army, and they married on the Army base right before he left for Europe.

After the war ended, she struggled to get pregnant. She ended taking DES in the belief that it would prevent miscarriages and other complications. At the beginning of the fifties, my Uncle Richard was born first, and then my mom came along two years later.

My head is full of stories of their adventures in Kendall, Florida. She was a devoted wife and mother while my grandpa owned furniture stores and other businesses. They had many animals, and traveled extensively. They were faithful Christians, volunteers, and wonderful friends to almost everyone.

Because Grandma took DES, my mom had immense trouble having children. My mom endured three miscarriages and other medical issues before I was born prematurely. I ended up being the only grandchild. Grandma was 71 when I born, but was an amazing grandmother from the very start.

She taught me so many things:

  • Cooking – I can almost taste her leg of lamb every Easter.
  • Keeping a beautiful house – The two houses they owned in Coral Gables were always immaculately decorated!
  • A love of traveling – She and Grandpa cruised all over the world!
  • Patience
  • A love of reading, newspapers, libraries, and bookstores.
  • Sets of dishes / china are practical, but also collectible.
  • How to play Scrabble and complete the hardest crossword puzzles.
  • Frozen Oreos are the best Oreos.
  • Keeping the faith.
  • Calling family and friends on the phone on a regular basis.
  • Getting old with grace, peace, and acceptance.

Grandpa, the first of my grandparents to leave this world, passed away on August 25, 2008. Although sad, Grandma Grace was incredibly strong and forgiving. She endured multiple estate sales, and the eventual sale of the home they shared for nearly 10 years on Palmarito Street. After the house sold, she moved in with my Uncle Richard, who only lives a few miles away in Miami.

She passed away peacefully on July 31, 2013, at the age of 96.

Next July marks what would have been her 100th birthday.

I want to do something special then.

Until the next headline, Laura Beth 🙂

  28. Post 5 things that make you laugh-out-loud
  29. What are your goals for the next 30 days
  30. Your highs and lows for the month

What are your top 3 pet peeves?

  1. Spelling and grammar errors. I’m not perfect, but I’m one of those people who will do my absolute best to keep my written communications as error-free as possible. This is what happens when you grow up enjoying English class, actually liking spelling tests, working on a newspaper for your university for eight semesters, and minoring in Rhetoric and Professional Writing, among other things. I’m also one of those people who spells out every single word in text messages!
  2. Lots of things about driving – Distracted drivers, tailgaters, people not using their turn signals, etc. Full disclosure: I am a reformed tailgater. My ex-boyfriend John was a very aggressive driver, and I picked up a lot of his bad habits. In December 2010, I rear-ended an SUV, five minutes from my house. There wasn’t a scratch on her SUV, but I did $4,000 in damage to my Camry. That sobered me up real quick. Then, I wrote a post about my car sliding off Route 460 in terrible snowy weather in 2014 – You better believe I’m never doing that again! In essence, I try to treat my car very carefully, and I wish other drivers would do the same. But, I shrug my shoulders, do my best to keep at least a car length in front of me at all times, and attempt to drive defensively.
  3. Beating around the bush. I really appreciate it when people don’t dance around an issue or telling me if they have a problem with me. Brutal honesty is, well, brutal – But it’s BETTER. Again, full disclosure, I always feel guilty when I’m put in this position. It’s awkward, uncomfortable, and sweat-inducing. However, for me, it’s better to tell me what’s wrong, or whatever it is, from the get-go.

Until the next headline, Laura Beth 🙂

Write something that someone told you about yourself that you never forgot

This one was really hard! I had to dig deep into my memory bank.

Okay – This is going to sound really, really cliché, but I will never forget when my mom first told me, “What doesn’t kill you, makes you stronger.”

And she wasn’t the only one. It was repeated to me, from several different people, for several months in 2010. This started right around the time I finally gathered the courage to break up with my abusive boyfriend, John. At that point, I had been suffering under his control and manipulation for a little over for four years.

Simultaneously, I was completing my college internship at The New York Times Shared Services Center in Norfolk. My internship supervisor, Emily, was fabulous. She’s one of my many “mothers” – I’m fortunate to have at least six wonderful women in my life that could be my mother from another.

Anyway, Emily adopted “What doesn’t kill you, makes you stronger” as one of her mantras for our work at the company. So, by way of repetition, it became one of my mantras, too.

Then, in 2011, by complete happenstance, I discovered that Kelly Clarkson wrote a song titled “Stronger (What Doesn’t Kill You),” and it quickly became one of my all-time favorites.

Five years later, I play that song at least one week via YouTube as a way to ground myself, remind myself that I’m still here, and I’m a strong woman.

And, here’s my Day 1!

  1. List 10 things that make you happy

Excellent!

This kind of ties into my recent “Happiness Tag” post, but I tried to write about 10 original things for this post.

10 Things That Make Me Happy

  1. Nature. I love landscapes, the outside world, sunsets, plants, gardens, flowers – I could go on and on and on. I studied the environment as part of my two-year Visual Arts class in high school, and it gave me a much greater appreciation for this planet that we call Earth. I love nature photography, too. Exploring parks gives me immense joy. I love traveling to my in-laws’ farm, because there’s nature EVERYWHERE!
  2. Driving in my car in the spring and fall with the windows down, blasting my favorite music. It’s so wonderful to put my hair up, turn up the radio, and feel the fresh air on my skin as I’m driving somewhere! Bring on the cooler weather, stat!
  3. Meghan Trainor. I recently found a mix of her songs on YouTube, and I haven’t stopped listening to it! She’s fantastic. I love the videos, her style, her voice, and the different messages that she incorporates. Al and I saw The Peanuts Movie earlier this year, and I instantly recognized her voice in “Better When I’m Dancin'”. I was bouncing along in my seat!
  4. The colors green and gold. These two colors symbolize two of the best things in my life – The Green Bay Packers, and Alpha Sigma Tau! I’m so excited that football season is starting again!!
  5. Long phone dates with my friends Lyndsey and Amanda. Amanda was my roommate during our junior year at Longwood, and Lyndsey is a wonderful mutual friend of ours. They are both amazing women, doing amazing things! The only problem is I live many hours and hundreds of miles away from them! We try to do regular phone dates, and just last week we committed to doing them once a month. They’re two of my closest friends, and talking to them on the phone is so personable and wonderful!
  6. Pastel paintings. This ties in with #1, with my high school Visual Arts class. I chose pastels as my main medium for my final assessment for IB. I kept most of the paintings I did, and I want to get them out from under my old bed, frame them, and display them in our house! I also want to invest in a set of good pastels and start painting again.
  7. The 8:30 service at my church. Right now, I serve on the church’s Media team, where once a month, I run the computers and projectors. I love the contemporary music that the band plays. I always get a rush from the energy, and I always leave the building feeling uplifted and inspired!
  8. Podcasts. When I got my personal iPhone back in December, I quickly discovered the Podcasts app, and I love it for my commute back and forth to work. I have a lot from NPR – Serial, StoryCorps, This American Life, Fresh Air, Ask Me Another, Wait Wait … Don’t Tell Me!, Invisibilia, Embedded – but I have also discovered some other awesome ones: Casefile True Crime, Lore, Myths and Legends, The Nerdist, The Way I Heard It with Mike Rowe, Remarkable Lives, Tragic Deaths; and Unsolved Murders: True Crime Stories.
  9. Having the ability to express myself freely, whether through speaking, writing, or any other form of communication.
  10. Having a home that is becoming my sanctuary. I love having a place of our own, where Al and I have grown and will continue to grow as a couple and as husband and wife. I’m grateful that I’m able to drive to it every day from work. I feel safe and peaceful. I can’t wait to see what happens next!

That wraps up Day 1!

Come back tomorrow for Day 2!

Are you doing a blogging challenge for the month of September? I’d love to hear about it!

Until the next headline, Laura Beth 🙂

Writing Prompt #6: Skinning Humanity

“We are all brothers under the skin – and I, for one, would be willing to skin humanity to prove it.”

-Ayn Rand

I’ve mulled over this topic for a while now. There are so many facets to this one.

Here’s a few questions to ponder:

  • How do you see yourself?
  • How do you see others?
  • How are you acting and showing yourself to others?

I put up a picture of a being that is half-angel, half-demon. I believe that there are angels and demons within all of us, and then those angels and demons also themselves known, through our words and actions.

Also, Ayn Rand is a bad-ass. I read several of her books in high school and college (Anthem, The Fountainhead, Atlas Shrugged). I plan to re-read them, as I know my perceptions have shifted in becoming an adult. Check her out. I could fill a blog post and then some about her, her life, and her works.

This post was partially inspired by a conversation between my friend Justin and I.

In the fall of 2010, we originally met as classmates in Halliday’s Basic Broadcasting class. I’ll admit, at first, Justin intimidated me. He towered over me, plus he was taller than everyone else, with the exception of the two basketball players in the class.

He normally dressed in all black, didn’t say much to anyone, and appeared “emo” to me.

But I didn’t know him then.

On the flip side, Justin thought I was a super energetic sorority girl who took notes constantly. I mean, I literally wrote down almost everything that either Halliday said, or what was on his PowerPoints. Yeah, I was that kid.

Justin said, “Do not judge the holy man to be 100 percent pure, and do not judge the kid all in black of being incapable of giving and feeling love.”

In short, this goes back to the old saying, “Don’t judge a book by its cover.”

Because of this conversation, I started looking at the people around me a bit differently.

I personally try, with all my might, to not judge anyone. I want to make an honest effort to get to know people first, before deciding if I like them or not.

For the most part, I get along with almost everyone. I kill with kindness, so to speak. However, there are some people, and some character traits, that just bug the hell out of me and drive me crazy. So, my resolve is to avoid these people and character traits as much as I can. If there are instances where I can’t avoid them, I just smile, nod, and get through it. And if it becomes unbearable or massively uncomfortable, I cut them out of my life. It’s happened before, and it will probably happen some more in the future. It’s really freeing, actually.

With Justin, I may have been intimidated at first, but that didn’t last long. We ended up in group projects for both of Halliday’s Broadcasting classes, and we progressed from classmates to being friends. Now, four years later, we’re close friends and enjoy meeting up as often as possible with our significant others.

Justin also shared this system he had come up with a while ago, called “The Caste of 4 Wings.”

“What you wear and how you act around strangers and friends are key factors in how your wings will be seen”

There are four types of wings that people can possess:

  1. White Angel Wings: People who are seen by society and others to be good, caring, and warm people. In truth they are that. They help out others, volunteer, do good work for others.
  2. Black Demon Wings: People who are seen as no good and untrustworthy, evil and vile. They live up to that, as they abuse people, murder, rob, treat others like shit.
  3. Black Angel Wings: Wings wore by people who are seen as good people and someone you can trust but in reality they are the opposite. Can manipulate people, use the trust of others and exploit it for their own personal gain. How they are seen by others is not who they really are.
  4. White Demon Wings: Wings wore by people deemed by society as a menace, like outsiders or loners who people think don’t do anything really. In reality they just want to love people, can perhaps be hurt and want others to say “It’s okay.” and despite what others see them as, their true friends know the goodness, love, and kindness in their hearts.

I was absolutely fascinated as Justin was explaining this to me.

Then it shifted to what wings we thought we had. For me, I thought it over for a while.

In the past, I’ve been characterized as having White Angel Wings – Being the teacher’s pet, being a “goody two-shoes,” volunteering my time and talents, always willing to sign up, step up, and help anyone.

And over the years, that hasn’t really changed, I don’t think. I’ve always tried to be warm, caring, and a good person overall. However, I’m certainly not perfect, nor do I want to be. So I may have White Angel Wings, but I try to be as humble and down-to-earth as possible.

Justin considers himself to have White Demon Wings. Once I read the explanation, it made perfect sense. This is how I saw him when we first met at Longwood. I personally never saw him as a “menace,” but I originally thought he was a loner and kept to himself. I knew he loved video games. I wasn’t sure about him and his personality, at first.

In reality, he’s a wonderful guy, with such a big heart. I’ve enjoyed getting to know him better over the last few years, and he’s a great friend. I’m so happy that he’s found love with his girlfriend Heaven. He enjoys his solitude and he’s definitely a gamer, but those are not bad things. He likes to plan get-togethers with our group of six friends (Al, me, Justin, Heaven, Drew, and Katie). We’re stoked about going to Kings Dominion in a week and a half with Al, Heaven, Katie, and our friends Brian and Mike.

As I thought about “The Caste of 4 Wings,” I realized there are people that I have encountered in my 26 years on this Earth who have all four types of wings. I certainly prefer to interact with the ones that have White Angel Wings and White Demon Wings. However, I’ve acknowledged that a select few that I’ve known have had Black Angel Wings and Black Demon Wings. Fortunately, most of them have faded from my life, at this point. There are a few that are manipulators that I have to deal with and have dealt with, but as long as I’m able to take them in small doses, I’m good.

These wings can be applied to everyone. I’ve thought about those who have made headlines recently, from the President, to Dylann Roof, to the Pope, to the people who report the news.

  • President Obama: Due to the nature of his position, as a politician in the U.S. and now the Commander-in-Chief, I would classify him as having Black Angel Wings, from my perspective. However, there are others that probably perceive him as having Black Demon Wings. In fact, there are probably people in this country that have thought of him as having all four kinds of wings, at certain points in his career.
  • Dylann Roof: As the suspected shooter of nine black people in a South Carolina church, this guy has Black Demon Wings, all the way. I can’t see it another way.
  • Pope Francis: Like the President, I’m sure people have thought of the Pope as having different kinds of wings. For me, I’m happy that he has been proactive on so many issues. Because of that, and the appearance of a warm, caring nature for everyone, I would give him White Angel Wings.
  • News Anchors/Reporters: As a mass media major in college, I definitely got an education on what news reporters and anchors do and how the broadcasting realm works. Their images are projected for all to see, but we don’t really see them off-camera. We don’t know who they really are when the camera turns off. Again, people have probably given them all four types of wings at some point. It’s hard to pinpoint, but for me, I can see them having Black Angel Wings or White Demon Wings, and in rare instances, White Angel Wings.

Keep in mind, these are just examples. And these are strictly my thoughts and opinions.

What do you think?

I’m glad Justin and I had this conversation. It really has changed my perspective on people, both in my life and those that I have never met.

I really like “The Caste of 4 Wings,” and I’m happy Justin shared it with me. Now I find myself thinking of people in terms of what wings I think they have, and then setting out to see if my perceptions are really true, or not. It’s fascinating to think about. This is something that will stick with me forever.

I encourage you to try it for yourself. Think about the wings you think you have, and then the wings of people around you. You might surprise yourself. I know it surprised me.

Until the next headline, Laura Beth 🙂

Writing Prompt #5: Juggling

I’ve fallen off the writing bandwagon. However, I’m determined to hitch another ride!

September flew by. Now we’re into the first full week of October!

Nothing earth-shattering has happened in the last month, just life. I’m like a juggler, just trying to keep all of my pins in the air – There’s work, online classes, PEO, AST, church, working out, and my social life, to name the main ones. There are days where I struggle to keep 10+ aloft, but there are others where it’s less than that. And I’m grateful through all of it.

I tried to keep a list of priorities for a long time, but now since I basically juggle everything simultaneously, I just pick and choose based on my time and energy level. I felt guilty for a while, but I got over it. Feeling guilty doesn’t help anything!

I’ve also realized that I don’t have time for certain things anymore. When I’m home with my parents, it’s very rare that I sit and watch TV (When I’m with Al at his house, that’s a different story – They have cable and that wonderful thing called Netflix!). I’m working on reducing my computer time as well, especially when I’m not at work. Since my job involves the computer for basically my entire workday, there are days where I go home and I just don’t want to look at any screens!

On the contrary, I’m trying to fit in a few things that I haven’t had (or made) the time for. Reading is the top one. I haven’t so much as touched a book since July!

I’m also gearing up for NaNoWriMo 2014 to begin (Only three weeks from Saturday!), so I’m starting to write daily now to get into that habit. Writing letters to Justin and Drew certainly helps with that! Also, journaling has been major therapy for me, for years.

I also want to craft more. I love the wreaths that I have made so far, and I have more to make!

What do you juggle? I’d love to hear about it!

I’ll wrap this up as my workday begins. Happy Thursday, everyone!

Writing Prompt #4: Music and Identity

Music is so powerful. It takes a person through so many life stages. There are countless quotes, research, studies, and so on about the benefits of music and how amazing it is for the soul, the mind, brain development, and more.

I played piano for about five years and then switched to viola for eight years. Even though I was trained in the “classical” instruments, I enjoy music with lyrics a bit more than classical pieces.

I love having conversations with my friend Justin. I know we are friends for life because we can literally talk about anything and everything, at any time. He’ll tell you that we were chatting on Facebook very early one recent Saturday morning, until almost 4 a.m. We’re always sharing things with each other, whether it be a story, a news article, research, or something funny.

He shared something amazing with me recently: The music video for Kelly Clarkson’s “Dark Side.”

Before Justin shared this with me, I had only heard snippets of the song on the radio. I’m so glad he shared the video with me. How powerful.

I’ve always found music lyrics to be incredibly meaningful and powerful.

Case in point:

Everybody’s got a dark side
Do you love me?
Can you love mine?
Nobody’s a picture perfect
But we’re worth it
You know that we’re worth it
Will you love me?
Even with my dark side?

It takes incredible talent to write something like that, and then have it be listened to thousands, if not hundred of thousands or millions, of times over. The “Dark Side” video on YouTube currently has over 21 MILLION views. It was uploaded to her channel on May 24, 2012. Wow!

The reason behind Justin sharing this with me stemmed from this weekend – Al and I got together with Justin and our friends Katie and Drew for most of the day on Saturday. We played through the whole deck of Cards against Humanity, and then the conversation changed over to music and relationships (Justin’s girlfriend, Heaven, is in her last semester at Longwood). Katie and Drew have been together the longest of the three couples – They’ll be celebrating 7 YEARS in October! That’s amazing! (Al and I just celebrated 4 years together this past Thursday, and Justin and Heaven are approaching their 2-year anniversary very shortly)

Anyway, the topic shifted to weddings and dancing, and the like. Katie and Drew asked Al and I if we had a song for us – and we were a bit stumped. Al and I like a lot of different music! Unlike us, Katie and Drew’s is an Eric Clapton classic.

Justin shared “Dark Side” with me with the thought that I might identify myself with it, in regards to my relationship with Al. After listening to it, it doesn’t just apply to me! I consider this to be a “blanket song,” or one that a lot of different people can relate to or identify with, across the board.

I love songs like this. It’s not exclusive to just one person or a specific couple / category / identity. I’ve noticed a lot of mainstream music is becoming less and less blanket-like, with certain genres in particular.

Take country music, for example. I hesitate to try to identify myself with a lot of it, although I like listening to the genre in general. To showcase my point, have you ever noticed that a lot of the girls in country music songs tend to all be blonde and blue-eyed?

Yep. That’s not me, literally. Total brunette and hazel-eyed over here.

There’s a difference in listening to music and identifying with music. Music affects all of us in some way, shape, or form. And if it doesn’t do that for you, I’m very suspicious.

Anyway, see below for the songs that I truly identify with.

1. “You Raise Me Up” – Josh Groban

2. “Here I Am, Lord” – Dan Schutte

3. “Don’t Stop Believin'” – Journey

4. “Stronger (What Doesn’t Kill You)” – Kelly Clarkson

5. “The Way” – Clay Aiken

6. “Who I Am With You” – Chris Young

7. “September” – Earth, Wind & Fire

8. “I Knew You Were Trouble” – Taylor Swift

9. “Shine” – Clay Aiken

10. “Hooked on a Feeling” – Blue Swede

11. “Dark Side” – Kelly Clarkson

12. “You’re the Inspiration” – Chicago

13. “Fire and Rain” – James Taylor

14. “Carolina in My Mind” – James Taylor

15. “Smile” – Uncle Kracker

16. “Haven’t Met You Yet” – Michael Buble

17. “Against All Odds” – Phil Collins

18. “As Long As You Love Me” – Backstreet Boys

I’d love to hear your thoughts on this subject!

Happy Sunday, all. Welcome to September!

Until the next headline, Laura Beth 🙂

Writing Prompt #3: Confessions

I took this idea from a dear friend and sorority sister, Amy. Check out her blog!

Like Amy, I found this exercise to be therapeutic. It brought an incredible sense of relief and peace as I started to pour them out on paper.

Like Usher croons, these are my confessions:

1. I confess that I’m very content with my life right now. And I kind of feel guilty about it, knowing that so many people around struggle day-to-day. In spite of the guilt, I’m very much at peace, unlike my feelings a few months ago!

2. I confess that I feel like I’m not as supportive as a daughter, friend, and girlfriend as I should be. I’ve worked very hard to love myself and pay attention to me, and not everyone else all the time like I used to. However, I feel like that I’ve been selfish.

3.  I confess that my true passion is writing. If I could quit my job and write full-time for the money that I make now, I’d do it in a heartbeat. Heck, I’d do it for less money! I love writing on this blog and I would be over the moon if I’m able to publish at least one novel in my lifetime. For now, though, as I work and get through my paralegal degree, I resign myself to write as much as can and faithfully participate in National Novel Writing Month every year …

4. I confess that I relish, thrive, on alone time. I’m definitely an extrovert, no doubt about that. But after a while (several hours is starting to become my upper limit, but it truly depends on who I’m with), I need to close the door behind me and be able to breathe again. I secretly hate the fact that I don’t have an office at work, I just have a cube. I wish, just once a workday, that I could close a door!

5. I confess that, related to #4, I’m terrified that my alone time will simply disappear and never come back when Al and I get married. I was virtually by myself for 10 months in my apartment, and that was fantastic. Now I’ve been by myself in Mom and Dad’s house for a significant portion of the summer, and I don’t want to give it up!

6. I confess that I’m struggling to keep the momentum going to finish my paralegal degree. I know that I’m doing the right thing by going slowly and not overloading myself with full-time school, but it’s been immensely frustrating to see my credits add up little by little. I wish I was able to take a full load like I did at Longwood, but then I wouldn’t have the time or energy for other beautiful things in my life.

7. I confess that I’ve altered my Sunday morning routine, almost as quickly as I wrote the blog post about it. I went on a mission trip the week after I wrote that post, and it re-awakened my senses. In the span of a week and a half, I knew that I needed to go back to church. And since I have, my life has changed for the better.

8. I confess that I want to travel. I wish I could take an extended leave from my current life and just up and travel the world! I have been blessed to have been able to cross the Atlantic several times before the age of 25, but I don’t want to stop. I desperately want to see all 50 states, and visit all of the lighthouses in the U.S. at some point.

Happy Friday! I hope everyone has a great day and an awesome weekend!

Until the next headline, Laura Beth 🙂

Writing Prompt #2: “Self Portrait in Third Person”

I follow this wonderful website, Freckled Italian, religiously. I check it every single day, excited to see the newest post. Megan is a fellow writer and Longwood grad that I love. She is so sweet! Her post on June 25th was the inspiration for the following.

This is the postscript from Megan: This post is in response to the following prompt: “In the same way a painter does a portrait of a person, do a portrait in words…Do a self-portrait in the third person.” (From Old Friend from Far Away, page 214.)

I originally posted my response in the comment section. I read it over multiple times in the last two days, and each time I felt more confident that it needed to be shared here as well. Enjoy, and let me know what you think!

She is jolted awake by her two cell phone alarms at 5:20 a.m. each morning. As she fumbles to press the right buttons/screen on her old LG and her new-ish work iPhone for another 10 minutes of sleep, she settles on her stomach and thinks about where she is thus far.

Laura Beth has recently moved back in with her parents to save as much money as possible, after being on her own in a cozy garage apartment for 10 months. She mulls over all the blessings in her life — Such a supportive family and a host of friends and sorority sisters that she treasures as an only child; a full-time job with multiple benefits such as a wonderful work family; the opportunity to work toward a paralegal degree. She knows that she only had a 50-50 shot at life when she entered this world 15 weeks too soon in 1988, and she is grateful for every breath.

She also knows that a wonderful man by the name of Al will likely ask her to marry him by year’s end, and thinking of that alone brings her utter joy and peace.

She studies herself before starting the water for her shower. Long legs like her namesake, great-grandma who lived to be 102; pale skin with a smattering of moles and freckles all over, and curves that she is finally loving and appreciating. She’s gained around 20 pounds since walking across the Longwood stage, Communication Studies degree in hand, a little over three years prior; but that doesn’t bother her anymore. She’s finally learned to be comfortable in her own skin. She is in complete control of her body.

As the sun starts to break through the clouds, she climbs into her Camry to make the 40-minute drive to Newport News. The commute is longer now, especially heading home, but she knows she’s making the drive for a good, stable job that will carry on into her future career endeavor. She knows that she is strong, independent, compassionate, with a touch of dramatic flair when she gets excited. No need for coffee or Starbucks – Her seemingly-endless amount of energy is fed with a whole-wheat bagel, vanilla yogurt, and water. At nearly 26 years old, Laura Beth is full of life and can’t wait to write the next chapter.

Happy Thursday! I’m really trying to get on a consistent blogging schedule, more than once or twice a month! Have a great day, and Go Team USA!!!
