10 Things I Hate About You (1999)

I love this movie, so much. Loosely based on Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew, I love the modern adaptation!

Joseph Gordon-Levitt is positively adorable, and Larisa Oleynik is more “grown-up” after her stint as the main character on Nickelodeon’s The Secret World of Alex Mack.

Then, there’s the polar opposites of Julia Stiles and Heath Ledger. Swoon! Julia Stiles, as Kat, takes no prisoners and I love it. I love how the four of them are intertwined almost from the start. And Larry Miller as Kat and Bianca’s overprotective father is funny, yet also relatable!

I’ll probably watch this movie again this weekend. It’s somewhat of a guilty pleasure movie for me now.

Ever After: A Cinderella Story (1998)

We had this on VHS! I remember being scared by a few of the scenes the first couple of times I watched it. Now, I want to watch it again. It’s been years!

I love the historical fiction take on this Cinderella-inspired story. I remember being fascinated by France and French history after watching this. Drew Barrymore is beautiful!

The Wedding Singer (1998)

I LOVE this movie!!

In my opinion, this is one of the best 1980s-period movies. Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore are adorable. And I heard the name “Julia Gulia” for YEARS before I saw this movie in full.

In a way, this movie is still relevant today. There are people who fall in love with others who have certain images or ideals of them, like Linda did with Robbie. However, Robbie finally comes to his senses and recognizes what a good thing, and a good person, Julia is. And that’s part of what makes this movie so endearing.

Glenn’s character reminded me of my ex, John, in a really creepy way. I’m glad Julia finally saw the light, but her character reminded me of me when I was in school. It was weird!

This movie is easily in my top 10 films now. I’ve only seen it twice, but I plan to watch it more frequently. Like other films, a big selling point for me is the soundtrack. I also love how Billy Idol is involved!

Fools Rush In (1997)

About a year ago, Al and I were looking for something to watch on streaming during a weekend. He asked if I’d ever seen Fools Rush In. The blank look I gave him said it all, and he couldn’t believe it.

This movie is now in my top 20 favorite movies. It’s very much of the time period – Matthew Perry was in the limelight because of Friends, and Salma Hayek’s star was rising, having been a telenovela star and then in a few feature films at this point.

Although insta-love doesn’t always work, this movie is an exception. Their characters are instantly attracted to each other. And, in a city like Las Vegas, nothing is surprising.

One of the best things about this movie is the soundtrack. So many good songs! I mean, Elvis! Also, Dean Martin, Wayne Newton, Enrique Iglesias, and Gloria Estefan!

The story itself is very sweet, and I enjoyed their chemistry. I want to watch it again!

Writing Prompt #217: Romantic Movies (Day 16)

Clueless (1995)

This movie was all the rage when it was released! I was only seven when it came out, much too young to see a PG-13 movie. However, we definitely talked about it at school.

I didn’t realize it was a loose re-telling of Emma until years later. I love how the director, Amy Heckerling, studied real Beverly Hills high school students to learn how they talked and their mannerisms, among other things.

And, Paul Rudd – You’ve never aged! Holy cow!

I didn’t care for Alicia Silverstone’s character, but now that I’ve seen it several times, I think the producers did a good job of capturing the attitudes and lifestyles of wealthy teenagers. I wanted all the clothes!!

I enjoyed the relationships in this movie. Typical high school love, but also sweet.

I love the love Forrest has for Jenny throughout this gem of a movie. This movie is my all-time favorite. If it’s on TV, I watch it. I first watched it in middle school, when it was broadcast on ABC that Saturday night when I was babysitting. I was so enthralled with the movie, I barely moved until it was over.

I can’t believe it’s the 25th anniversary of the release this summer! I hope theaters re-release it. I really want to see it on the big screen for the first time.

Tom Hanks is on my top five list of favorite actors. I think I’ve seen nearly every movie he has been in!

This movie is no exception. I haven’t watched it in a while, but I remember watching it on TV years ago. When I stumbled upon it, the movie was already halfway through, and I was inspired to watch it from the beginning. I love the love Jonah has for Sam, and for Annie. It’s such a sweet story!

I want to re-watch so many movies now, thanks to this blogging challenge!

Groundhog Day (1993)

I love this movie. We usually watch it at least once a year. While not billed as a true “romantic comedy,” I always get the good vibes as the story between Bill Murray and Andie MacDowell unfolds in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania.

It’s one of those movies that is technically “vintage” now at more than 25 years old, but it’s also timeless.

Writing Prompt #206: Romantic Movies (Day 6)

Footloose (1984)

I’d memorized the words to “Footloose” by Kenny Loggins YEARS before I saw the movie in full. Once one of my sorority sisters found out I hadn’t seen the whole movie in 2010, she organized a sweet movie night, just the two of us, and we watched it in my dorm room. It was so awesome! Thanks, Sam!

I can’t articulate very well how much I love this movie! I love the music. I love Kevin Bacon. I love the story, which is based on real-life events from Elmore City, Oklahoma. I love the certain nostalgia feelings of high school. I went to college in a small town, so I could imagine how people in towns like Farmville, and hundreds (if not thousands) of others in these United States, live in a small, close-knit community where all the kids grow up together and their families know one another.

I also love how a series of life lessons are sprinkled into this coming-of-age story, which has comedy, drama, romance, and music!

As a Christian, I also appreciated the inclusion of the pastor and his family into the story, and the roles their characters play throughout the movie.

I will also mention that I enjoyed the Footloose remake in 2011. I loved seeing in theaters, and Al was so sweet to take me. I loved Miles Teller as Willard, and Julianne Hough was awesome as Ariel. I play the soundtrack in my car about a month, especially if I need a pick-me-up. While no one can outdo Kenny Loggins, Blake Shelton did a bang-up job with “Footloose.” I also enjoyed Jana Kramer’s version of “Let’s Hear It for the Boy,” and “Almost Paradise,” performed by Victoria Justice and Hunter Hayes. “Dance the Night Away” was a great choice for a pivotal scene in the remake as well.

Do you have a favorite song from Footloose? Me personally, my favorite is “Footloose,” followed by “Never” by Moving Pictures, and “Holding Out for a Hero” by Bonnie Tyler.
