Getting Personal #26: “Guest Post by Laura Beth @HotShotHeadlines: Raising Awareness About Domestic Violence” (Reblogged)

Domestic - pinterest

Today, this blog post is a HUGE step for me.

For the first time, ever, I’m sharing my entire story — My entire experience from 2006 through 2010. Until now, I’ve mentioned pieces of it, here and there, on this blog. This took a lot of courage. It took me multiple drafts of an email, several days of reviewing and re-reading, feeling knots in my stomach and tears in my eyes.

I’ve wanted to do this for almost six years now, but something kept telling me to wait, to be patient, that the right venue or opportunity would come along.

Thanks to Carla and her amazing blog, she’s made it her mission to share those stories that need to be read / heard. Please check out her blog – The Melodramatic Confessions of Carla Louise. She balances tough, scorching topics – Feminism, rape culture, domestic violence, abuse, capital punishment – with awesome challenges about TV shows and music.

Carla has a disclaimer at the beginning of her post, but I’ll share a version of my own:

Disclaimer: This post contains graphic depictions of abuse, violence, sex, alcohol, and a few other difficult topics.

With that said, I welcome comments or questions. Please feel free to reach out to me, via commenting here, or by the information on my “Contact” page.

Thank you.

Until the next headline, Laura Beth 🙂

Getting Personal #25: August Goals

Goals - quoteslike

Several bloggers I follow do monthly goal posts, and I’ve always enjoyed reading them. It’s good to put yourself out there, to hold yourself accountable!

When I read Brey’s post this morning, I knew I wanted to start doing my own.

I commented on Brey’s post with my goals, so I’ll share those first:

  1. Build up some cash
  2. Thoroughly enjoy my birthday!
  3. See Star Trek: Beyond, Jason Bourne, and maybe one other movie with my husband
  4. Prepare for the start of my Trial Prep & Discovery class at the end of the month
  5. Finalize our first wedding anniversary getaway for November
  6. Read Harry Potter and The Cursed Child
  7. Keep blogging!

Between writing that comment and starting this post, I came up with a few more:

  1. Paint as much of the house as possible
  2. Hopefully move my furniture!
  3. Find at least five new recipes
  4. Start tracking our monthly expenses via spreadsheet
  5. Check out geekgirlpenpals.com (Thanks, A Girl’s Voyage!)

Here’s the breakdown:

Build up some cash

  • Last month, I got bit by the American Girl bug. I have two dolls – Stephanie and Molly – and I happened to find several American Girl groups on Facebook. Let’s just say I went a little crazy / overboard (Neither doll has made the trek from Mom and Dad’s to our house yet, either). So, in August, I’ve pledged to slow down on the personal spending and try to rebuild some of my cash.

Thoroughly enjoy my birthday!

  • My birthday falls on a Sunday this year – So that’s awesome. I worked on my actual birthday for several years, and I hated it. Finally, I decided that I would take my birthday off from work if it fell during the week, or a Friday or Monday if it fell during the weekend. This year, I’m doing the Monday route, and I’m so excited. The last few years, I’ve treated myself to a movie, solo, one that Al may not want to see. My plan is to go to LUSH at MacArthur Mall and then see a movie there. We’re (Al, me, and my parents) also going to Olive Garden for dinner on Sunday night – Yum!

See Star Trek: Beyond, Jason Bourne, and maybe one other movie with my husband

  • We’re hoping to see Star Trek: Beyond this week. Jason Bourne also looks very good. We are considering seeing Suicide Squad on Thursday night, but it may be later this weekend or next week. I have roughly three weeks before my fall class starts, so I’m very excited for the break!

Prepare for the start of my Trial Prep & Discovery class at the end of the month

  • I have a short break before my Trial Prep & Discovery class starts on August 22nd. It’s another on-campus class in Virginia Beach, but the class is held just once a week, on Tuesday nights. I’m really excited for this one! We get to learn about trials, the discovery process, and how you prepare to go to trial. I need to get my books and make sure everything is squared away long before the 22nd!

Finalize our first wedding anniversary getaway for November

  • Our first wedding anniversary is November 14th. Yeesh, how time flies! Al and I have been discussing where to go and what to do. We’ve been debating back and forth – Do we go away, or do something local? We probably won’t be doing a whole week off of work, but likely a Friday – Tuesday thing, since our anniversary falls on a Monday this year, due to Leap Year.

Read Harry Potter and The Cursed Child

  • As much of a Harry Potter fan as I am, I was very skeptical about The Cursed Child. However, I’m going to bite the bullet and buy it!

Keep blogging!

  • I really enjoyed doing the July TV Show Photo Challenge! I had a lot of fun with it, and I’m so proud of myself that I posted every day for 16 days! Woohoo! I’m taking a break from daily challenges for this month, but I hope to do another one in September. In the meantime, I plan to keep blogging as much as possible – I have at least three books I want to read and review, plus house updates!

Paint as much of the house as possible

  • Al made amazing progress this weekend on the walls by our stairs and upstairs hallway. I was able to help a little, with finishing my final Legal Research project and all. We’re planning to get the paint for the four bedrooms tonight, and just go to town.

Hopefully move my furniture!

  • We haven’t moved much of my furniture because we’ve been painting, and our garages have been pretty full. So that would be nice to accomplish by the end of the month. Then we’ll be fully moved in, and my parents get two bedrooms back!

Find at least five new recipes

  • I want to pull out our new Crock-Pot and go to town, among other things. I have two recipes that I used years ago, but I want to push myself and find five brand-new recipes that will be healthy and tasty!

Start tracking our monthly expenses via spreadsheet

  • We just made our first mortgage payment! Wow. We decided last month to catalog everything in a spreadsheet, so we’ll sit down and start inputting every dollar.

Check out geekgirlpenpals.com

  • Thanks to her Snail Mail post, I want to check out this site immediately. I love writing letters and cards, so I’m excited to look at this site and possibly sign up to get a pen pal!

That’s it for my August goals!

I’m going to make this a regular thing – Do a “Goals” post around the 1st of the month, and then a “Recap” post at the end of the month. I’m excited!

Do you have any for this month?

Until the next headline, Laura Beth 🙂

Tag #3: The New York Times By The Book Tag

I saw this awesome tag on Getting Through Anxiety a couple days ago!

You know me, I love anything that deals with books!

The New York Times is also close to my heart. I was born in NYC. I get the NYT news alerts to my email. I did my college internship with a division of the NYT, the Shared Services Center in Norfolk, Virginia!

Okay – Here we go!

Questions:

What book is on your nightstand right now?

  • I currently do not have a nightstand in our bedroom (Still moving!) Haha. So, I’ll go with the book on my living room couch – “The One and Only: A Maryellen Classic 1.” I’m absolutely hooked on the BeForever series from American Girl!

If you could meet one author (living or dead) who would it be? What would you ask?

  • Tough question! I’d love to meet F. Scott Fitzgerald, since he wrote my favorite book. I’d ask him if he had a timeline or structure for writing and editing his works. I’ve written parts of three novels, but I haven’t mapped out the time to edit them!

What books might we be surprised to see on your shelf?

  • Maybe all of Nicholas Sparks’s novels? I studied the perceptions of love and romance of female readers of his novels for my college senior thesis, so I re-read them all in prep for my research and study.

How do you organize your personal library?

  • Right now, my huge bookcase is still at my parents’ house. I’m pretty picky – I try to organize everything by author, and then everything in the order of that author’s publication. I may reorganize it better when we move said bookcase into our house!

What book have you always meant to read but haven’t gotten round to yet?

Disappointing, overrated, just not good: what book did you feel you were supposed to like but didn’t?

  • The Divergent series. Thinking about all of them, it was a let-down.

What kind of stories are you drawn to?

  • Historical fiction, definitely. I love the Dear America series in particular.
  • Human interest stories (Think Chicken Soup for the Soul, etc.)
  • Certain crime novels.

What do you plan to read next?

  • Go Set A Watchman by Harper Lee.

I Tag…

  1. booksandbakes1 – Charley
  2. Sallyporte
  3. Becky Due – Author
  4. Thrice Read – Jenn, Caitlynn, and Eden
  5. Jay Colby

Tag #1: Reading Confessions

Reading - pinterest

I just saw this post on Ariel Lynn’s Writing Radiation, who originally saw it on The Melodramatic Confessions of Carla Louise, and she saw it on Getting Through Anxiety.

All of them are awesome bloggers!

I saw the word “reading” and was immediately intrigued!

Have you ever damaged a book?

  • The only instance I can think of was when I wrote my initials on the front dust jackets of a few of my American Girl historical novels. *facepalm*

Have you ever damaged a borrowed book?

  • Never! I can’t even highlight textbooks. I’ve never even written in the margins! Just thinking of it makes me cringe!

How long does it take you to read a book?

  • Excellent question. With my life, it varies. If you’ve read my Book Review posts, know that I try to post those within 24 hours of finishing that book. It depends. When I get in a groove, I can fly through a book. I do have to agree with the ladies before me: If I watched less TV / Netflix and spent less time on Facebook, I’d probably get through more pages in a shorter time span.

Books that you haven’t finished?

  • Fifty Shades of Grey.
  • The Twilight series – I started all four, but never brought myself to finish them.
  • Other than those, I really try to finish what I start!

Hyped / Popular books that you don’t like?

  • Fifty Shades of Grey.
  • The Twilight series.
  • Allegiant from the Divergent series.

Is there a book that you wouldn’t tell anyone you were reading?

  • Nope. I love telling people what I’m reading! To me, word-of-mouth is one of the best ways to promote a book, an author, and reading, in general.

How many books do you own?

  • Picturing my bookshelves at my parents’ house, I’d say probably 150 or so. I used to have many, many more, but I gave away eight full boxes of books to the local library in 2013 when I was preparing to move to my first apartment, and the huge heavy bookcase wasn’t going with me.

Are you a fast reader or a slow reader?

  • Depending on the book, I’m usually pretty fast. Interruptions do get in the way, especially with moving and such, so I’ve slowed down quite a bit. There were times I would plow through 5-6 books in a week or two. That’s certainly not the case now.

Do you like to buddy read?

  • I’ve never tried it. I know what it is though – When you and a friend read the same book at the same time. I think it would be an interesting experiment.

Do you read better in your head or out loud?

  • This is an interesting question. I occasionally catch myself reading certain lines aloud, but in a whisper to myself, and it kinds freaks me out. I’m a visual reader, so I can picture the scenes in my head. I can tell what I’m reading is good when I pause and can see the scene I just read in front of me, like I’m watching a movie.

If you were only allowed to own one book, what would it be and why?

  • This would be a terrible tragedy if it were to occur! However, if it were to happen, my pick would be The Great Gatsby. It’s my favorite book, one that I re-read every year. I love everything about it.

I tag:

  • Everyone! Reading is so much fun 🙂

Blog Awards #2: Bloggers Recognition Award

blogger

I don’t have an official credit for this image, but whomever created it, thank you! I love vintage typewriters!!

Wow. I’m so humbled to say that I was nominated for another award. I was nominated for the Bloggers Recognition Award by gettingthroughanxiety. She has an amazing blog – One that I can relate to on a personal level.

Thank you!

The Rules:

  • Thank the blogger who nominated you and provide a link to their blog.
  • Write a post to show your award.
  • Attach the award to the post.
  • Give a brief story on how your blog started.
  • Give a piece of advice or two to new bloggers.
  • Select 15 other blogs you want to give the award to.
  • Comment on each blog and let them know you nominated them and provide a link to the award post you created.

A Brief Story on How Hot Shot Headlines Started:

This blog started, in part, with Dr. Bill Stuart, affectionately known as Dr. B. I took his Computer-Mediated Communications class at Longwood University in the spring of 2010. One of our assignments was to create a blog, on any topic we wished, and do regular posts throughout the semester. Admittedly, I wasn’t too fond of the class – It felt like I was learning a lot of the same information that I had been taught for the last three years as a Communication Studies, Mass Media major.

Oh, how young and stupid (a.k.a., absolutely wrong) I was.

My blog was called “The Best Entertainment You’ve Never Seen!” and I structured it around the Greenwood Library’s selection of DVDs. I picked movies that I figured most of my classmates and friends had never seen, watched them, and then wrote synopses of them. I started to enjoy the assignment about halfway through the class. Along the way, I realized that I was growing fond of Dr. B. and his teaching methods.

By the end of that semester, I knew I wanted to keep blogging, but start something that was truly my own. It took a couple of tries before I arrived here, but I’m grateful for that process.

Sadly, Dr. B. passed away from a heart attack just a few weeks into the fall semester of 2012. He was just 44 years old. It had been more than a year since I had graduated, but the entire COMMunity was devastated.

I have to give credit to him, for giving that assignment, which opened my eyes to blogging. I realized that blogging was a great platform for my writing, especially if I wanted to become a published novelist at some point.

So, here’s to you, Dr. B. Thank you for inspiring me!

In addition, writing is one of my biggest therapies. I’ve enjoyed writing since the age of 10, and I’m thrilled that I have this platform available to me to do so. When I was diagnosed with Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) last summer, I knew this blog was one of the best medicines for me. It’s been a wonderful outlet.

My Advice to New Bloggers:

  • As others have said, blogging is about writing what’s important to you, the writer. Your blog is a platform for you to express yourself. Listen to your heart.
  • It doesn’t matter how often you write or post. Don’t put pressure on yourself to write every day. Don’t set a schedule, if you don’t want to. Everyone is different.
  • If you want people to read your blog, it’s important to share it. I’ve gotten so much feedback just by sharing my blog posts to my personal Facebook page. It makes a huge difference!

My 15 Nominees:

  1. Virginia Ashley Photography
  2. Earth Pilgrim
  3. Ordinary Adventures
  4. David Snape and Friends
  5. Nerdy Book Club
  6. Just Wunderlust
  7. Sincerely Reine
  8. Toulouse and Tonic

  11. Simply Marquessa

And, thanks again to gettingthroughanxiety for the nomination!

Blog Awards #1: The Liebster Award

liebster-award

Yesterday, I had the great honor to be nominated for The Liebster Award by the amazing Kristian Weigman, the author of Life Lessons Around The Dinner Table!

Thank you so much for the nomination, Kristian – I was so shocked when you commented on my most recent post! I’m honored!

The Liebster Award is unique – It’s given by bloggers to bloggers. It’s a great way to get to know the blogging community!

Here are the rules:

  • Recognize 5 other new bloggers.
  • Give the answers to 11 questions from the blogger who nominated you.
  • Tell readers 11 random facts about you.
  • Ask 11 more questions to the new bloggers.
  • Link this post back to the blogger who nominated you.

My questions from Kristian were:

Question #1: What was one of your most defining moments in life?

A: One of the most defining moments in my life was when I went on my first date with my now-husband, Al. It was my first true “first date” – All the other boys I dated, I’d met through my church, and all those relationships started something like, “Hey, we’ve known each other for a while, let’s give this dating thing a try?”

Al was the first guy who was someone I didn’t know very well. His brother had set us up, and after two weeks of texting and phone calls as I started my senior year of college, we decided to go to Virginia Beach for dinner and see Chicago perform on the boardwalk. I remember every single detail of that September Saturday. I remember thinking, “Wow – This is what dating is supposed to be.”

We’ve been together ever since. We wrote love letters to each other as part of our wedding vows, and without knowing it, we both wrote about that first date. Funny how that works. We will celebrate six years together on September 4th!

Question #2: How do you spend your free time?

A: I spend my free time with Al, my family, and my friends, as much as possible. When I don’t feel like being social, you’ll find me curled up on the couch with a book, or busy writing the next blog post or a new story. If I’m not reading or writing, I love to play softball, travel, take photos, cook, and enjoy my American Girl dolls.

Question #3: What are your top 3 favorite books, and why?

A: My favorite book is The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald. Although I had to read it in high school, I fell in love with the story and I got caught up in the characters and their world. It’s one book that I re-read multiple times every year.

My second favorite book is To Kill A Mockingbird, by Harper Lee. This was another assigned book in high school, but it’s one that I’ve re-read almost every single year. It’s taught me several life lessons over the years, and Lee’s talent as a writer is paramount.

My third favorite book  is The Happiness Project, by Gretchen Rubin. It’s a delightful memoir that chronicles a year of her life, with the single goal of becoming happier and finding more joy. It gave me a lot of perspective about my own life, such as really not taking anything for granted, and enjoying the little moments in life.

Question #4: What is your idea of a perfect day?

A: My idea of a perfect day is coffee in the morning, snuggling / cuddling with Al, reading at least part of a good book, taking a walk or a bike ride, listening to amazing music, taking a nap in a hammock, watching either the sunrise or the sunset, and just enjoying every minute of the day.

Question #5: What is the best compliment you have ever received?

A: This one was tough!

” … Also, thank you for using your voice, it has been my experience that being brave with ones voice, more times than not, inspires others to be brave with their own. Our collective voices create countless ripple effects and that, in my humble opinion, is where the magic is …”

This is an excerpt of a comment from Elin Stebbins Waldal, an author of a powerful memoir called Tornado Warning. I read her book twice, and then wrote a review on it.

She was so gracious – She not only read my review, but took the time to comment on it. Her words have stuck with me ever since.

Question #6: What do you enjoy most about blogging?

A: I love that I can write about anything that I want, and there are people in this world who actually read my writing! I’m so happy that people want to read what I write. I’ve always wanted to write, and to see that people appreciate my writing through my blog, it gives me incredible joy and satisfaction. So, thank you for reading!

Question #7: If you could have personally witnessed anything, what would you want to have seen?

A: Ohhhhh, wow. What a question!

I would love to have witnessed Martin Luther King’s “I Have A Dream” speech. I can only imagine what it was like on August 28, 1963 at the Lincoln Memorial. He was such a powerful speaker and advocate for peace. That would have been so special.

Question #8: What is the strangest thing you have ever eaten?

A: I tried pickled pig’s feet once, as part of a contest at church camp. It was super salty! I think I downed a massive glass of ice water immediately afterward.

Question #9: What instantly cheers you up?

A: Kermit The Frog! He’s my favorite Muppet. If I’m down, I’m known to find my stuffed Kermit and hold him for a while, or watch a few minutes of him on YouTube. Muppet Treasure Island is one of my favorite movies!

Question #10: If you could ask any person in the world, alive or dead for advice, who would it be, and what would you ask?

A: I would ask Princess Diana for advice. May God rest her soul, she was taken too soon.

I would ask her how she would deal with our world today, in the face of so much grief, terrorism, despair, war, and racism. Would she face our circumstances with as much compassion and care as she did the lepers, and AIDS patients, and the homeless?

Question #11: What is your favorite word or phrase?

A: “What doesn’t kill you, makes you stronger.”
